There are many different types of door locks available in Singapore. In the past few years, digital door lock (sometimes called Smart Lock) have begun to replace the conventional door lock which uses physical metal key. Conventional door lock is sometimes called the mechanical door lock.
Digital Door Locks
Digital door locks discard the need for the physical metal keys. The keys are now replaced by keypad for entering Personal Identification Number (PIN), Biometric scanner for finger print scanning, reading device for access card swiping or tapping and other more sophisticated device. Some digital locks use the proximity technology where a key fob is used to unlock the door when you are close to it. The key fob technology uses radio frequency technology and it is commonly used for car locks. The latest introduction is the smart phone controlled digital lock where you open the door by tapping your smart phone on the lock. It uses the bluetooth technology. Both digital and key locks offer good level of security as long as they are from established brands.
Conventional Key Locks versus Digital Door Locks
As conventional key locks have been around for many years, the design and functions have become very stable, reliable and predictable.Conventional door locks are less likely to malfunction and locksmiths are generally more comfortable opening them. Digital door locks are new. Therefore, they may appear to be more complicated and more difficult to unlock to the locksmith.
The technology of digital door locks is still advancing and more and more features and functions like motion sensor and digital video recording are incorporated into the locks. As digital door locks have computer programs installed in them, they are more prone to breaking down from computer bugs. Conventional key lock is like a manual gear of the car while digital lock is like an automatic gear box. The automatic gear box tends to give more problems than the manual gear box because of the computer programs installed in the gear box.
Other disadvantages of digital door locks include the possibility of failure to unlock when the battery is running low as well as the higher cost of installation.
Advantages of Digital Door Lock
So far we have discussed more about the disadvantages of digital door lock. How about its advantages? Digital key lock does not require you to carry the metal keys everywhere. This means that you will not lose your keys and do not have to duplicate a replacement set of keys. Digital key lock is particularly useful if you are renting out your apartment. Every time you change a tenant, you just have to deny the access of the previous tenant and allow the access of the new tenant. You need not change the lock or duplicate another set of keys. Elderly who struggle with keys may find digital door lock more convenient to use if they are comfortable with new technology. Some digital locks have security feature to record video when it detects movement near your door. This additional security feature cannot be found in conventional key locks.
